Plants vs Animals – The Vegan Debate

When I first created this site I knew that I would not only have the opportunity to share my love of food with the world, but that I would also be able to share the love I have for a good debate that usually happens around the dinner table. So now what if the debate turned towards the meal we just ate?? Was it good?? and not just good in the sense of was it prepared well, cooked properly, did it hit all of the right taste buds, but what if “Was it good?” meant was it actually good for us?? Was what we ate healthy? Was it part of a well-balanced meal? What is a well-balanced meal,  and who do we turn to to find out that information? Did I have to much, to little? Is portion control important? Am I supposed to stay away from sugar, or is it carbs, or maybe its fats??

I recently watched a documentary on Netflix called What the Health. In this documentary Filmmaker Kip Andersen addresses the 2015 report from the World Health Organization that classified Red meat as a group 2a, probably carcinogenic to humans and Processed Meat as a Group 1, carcinogenic to humans. Kip then proceeds to find out how 3 of the biggest health organizations in the U.S. , The American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society deal, or in what Kip portrays, how they won’t deal with this information. The filmmaker then through other interviews examines the alleged connection between the meat, dairy, and pharmaceutical industries to these  health organizations.

The film is very one sided, and does at times come across as a Vegan propaganda piece, but I will give full credit to Kip Andersen and the production team, they do a fantastic job of getting their views on the situation across. The power of persuasion is very high with this one, and it did its job with at least this viewer because at the end of the film I did exactly what it wanted me to do and that was to take a look at my diet, and start asking questions about what it is I am putting in my body.

Now it is time for the debate. This is where I would love to hear from you. If you can please take some time out of your day and watch this film. Let me know what your thoughts are. Are you a Vegan, and do you already live this lifestyle?? Have you thought about switching your diet to being more plant based?? Do you have no intentions of changing the way you eat, and why??

Please comment on this blog with your thoughts and ideas. Please like at the dinner table, lets keep this respectful and on point. No name calling, or putting anyone’s ideas down, just simple points and counter-points and maybe together we can all learn from one another.  I look forward to hearing from you soon

  1. First we are going to watch the movie on Netflix so that we have more context on foods and how they can affect us.
